Physical damage insurance for trucks and trailers
Covers damage to your own tractor, trailer or box truck from collision and other covered losses, such as theft or fire. You choose the deductible.
What physical damage covers
Physical damage insurance helps pay to repair or replace your own tractor, trailer or box truck after a covered loss, such as a collision, fire or theft, subject to the policy terms and your deductible. How a loss is valued depends on the policy.
It does not cover the freight you are hauling or harm you cause to others. Cargo and liability coverage handle those.
| Coverage | What it protects |
|---|---|
| Primary liability | Injury and property damage you cause to other people |
| Excess liability | Extra liability limits above your primary policy |
| Motor truck cargo | The freight you are hauling |
| Physical damage | Your own tractor, trailer or box truck |
| Trailer interchange | Trailers you pull that belong to someone else, under a written agreement |
| Workers' compensation | Injuries to your employees, where required and available |
Who needs physical damage coverage
Anyone who owns, finances or leases trucks, trailers or box trucks and wants to protect that equipment. Lenders and lessors commonly require physical damage coverage on financed or leased equipment.
Some policies offer options such as coverage for downtime or other add-ons. Availability depends on the carrier, so ask us.
What affects the cost
No two quotes are the same. We compare options from multiple carriers so you can see the trade-offs.
- Equipment type, age and value
- The deductible you choose
- Your operation: radius, routes and the states you run
- Your drivers and claims history
- Where equipment is kept and security measures

Physical Damage questions
Quick answers before you request a quote.
Does physical damage cover the freight?
No. Freight falls under motor truck cargo coverage.
Is it required?
Not by law, but lenders and lessors often require it on financed or leased equipment.
What deductible should I choose?
A higher deductible usually lowers the premium but means more out of pocket after a loss. We help you compare.
Does it cover a trailer I pull for someone else?
That is usually covered by trailer interchange coverage, which is separate.
What do you need to quote it?
Year, make, model and value of each unit, plus your operation, drivers and claims history.
