Trucking coverage

Non-trucking liability insurance

Liability coverage that may apply when a truck leased to a motor carrier is not being used for business. Whether it applies depends on your policy and the circumstances.

What it is

What non-trucking liability covers

Non-trucking liability, often called NTL, is liability coverage for a truck that is leased to a motor carrier when it is not being used for the carrier's business, for example when you are driving it for personal use. Bobtail coverage is similar and can apply when you are driving without a trailer, depending on the policy.

Coverage names and exact terms vary by carrier, so we check the definitions with you. It does not cover your own truck, the freight or harm you cause while under dispatch.

Who needs it

Who needs non-trucking liability

It is often asked for by owner-operators who lease their truck to a motor carrier. While you are under dispatch, the carrier's liability coverage usually applies, which is why this coverage addresses the time you are not.

If you operate under your own authority, primary liability usually applies instead. We will tell you what fits how you run.

FAQ

Non-Trucking Liability questions

Quick answers before you request a quote.

Is non-trucking liability the same as bobtail?

Not always. The terms differ by carrier, and the names are sometimes used for similar coverage. We explain the definitions in your policy.

Does it replace primary liability?

No. If you operate under your own authority, you need primary liability. We tell you what applies to your setup.

Do I need it if I lease to a carrier?

Often it is asked for or recommended, because the carrier's coverage usually applies only under dispatch. Ask us about your situation.

Does it cover my truck?

No. Damage to your own truck falls under physical damage coverage.

What do you need to quote it?

Details of your lease, your equipment, drivers and claims history.

Please note. Descriptions are general. Actual coverage depends on the policy you purchase, and coverage decisions are made by the carrier. Submitting a request is not a quote, binder or coverage.
